In 1969, Bill Gookin, a serious marathon runner with advanced degrees in biochemistry, developed Gookinaid ERG, Electrolyte Replacement with Glucose, especially noted for its speed of absorption. It is a powder we runners mixed with water for replenishment. Despite the emergence of the whole sport drink industry, you can still get it! It served me well starting in my second marathon (I was afraid to take anything in my first marathon as I hadn't done so on my training runs and I paid the price) and at the 23- and 37-mile marks of my 50-mile run. Now of course we can't get through a one-hour sitting without a bottle of something at arm's length. So, anyway, that's what ERG means to me.
